Of course all the focus here will be on the unbeaten Irish colt New Approach and despite not being out yet this season reports from Ireland have him in peak condition, and by all accounts it will take a very good one to lower his colours. He won the Dewhurst here at HQ at the backend of last year, beating Fast Company by ½ a length, and with that course experience and the way he battled on to the line will all work in his favour - especially over this tough mile.

That said, the runner-up that day, Fast Company, has seen been acquired by the Godolphin team and so with him only just behind him in the Dewhurst they will have a nice line of form on the Irish runner. New Approach also saw off another of their inmates, Rio De La Plata, in the National Stakes, so between the pair the men in blue will certainly know if they’ve got a horse good enough to trouble the favourite.

With all this in mind then their only runner Ibn Khaldun looks to hold every chance. He improved with each race last season and after learning his trade at Yarmouth has remained unbeaten in his last four runs. The last of those efforts was at the end of last season in the Group One Racing Post Trophy over a mile, and the way he demolished a decent field that day means he’ll have no worries getting this trip with further in future looking likely to be his preferred trip.

Of the rest, Henrythenavigator, from the Aidan O’Brien’s yard, is feared with the stable having such a decent record in the race and based on this alone last year’s Coventry Stakes winner looks another sure to give a good account.
