Betfred Sprint Cup:
Advanced: Best effort of the season last time when second to Duff over seven furlongs at York in Listed company. Still has a bit more to find.
Al Qasi: Lightly raced and a useful strike rate, including a victory last time in Group 3 company at the Curragh. Hails from a bang-in-form yard but big worries about the prevailing fast ground.
Amadeus Wolf: Not gone on from win at York in May and ground to make up on some of the principals. No complete forlorn hope but something to prove nontheless.
Asset: Speedy performer and can’t have the ground fast enough so has ideal underfoot conditions. Blinkers on for the first time should help sharpen him up mid-race and looks to have decent claims with Frankie Dettori up.
Balthazaar’s Gift: Beaten at odds-on last time at Newmarket but not a bad trial on the whole. All his wins have come with some ease in the ground so has that particular issue to overcome.
Fayr Jag: Admirable veteran and still capable of holding his own - but perhaps not quite at this level of competition.
Marchand D’Or: Ran with great credit when fourth in the July Cup before trotting up from Dutch Art at Deauville over seven furlongs. Form to make an impact for sure but easing of the ground would help his cause.
Mutawaajid: Not beaten far in the July Cup on British debut but then pulled too hard for his own good over seven furlongs at Goodwood. Back in trip again but needs to find some more improvement.
Red Clubs: Knocking on the door at the top level and should be better suited by the return to six furlongs after an excellent effort in the Nunthorpe. Should be thereabouts again.
Somnus: Former winner of this race but not shown a huge amount from two runs this season and is better with the mud flying in any case.
Hellvelyn: Royal Ascot success at two and back in the winner’s enclosure with a narrow verdict at Beverley in August. Confidence should have been boosted after that and could make in-roads into the deficit with Sakhee’s Secret from their July Cup clash.
Per Incanto: Italian import who has joined John Dunlop and not disgraced over seven furlongs in the Hungerford Stakes. Up in class and jury out as to whether he is good enough.
Sakhee’s Secret: Four from four this season and showed a blistering turn of foot to brush his rivals aside in the July Cup. Not hard to see why he is hot favourite on the back of that and sure to take all the beating again if in the same sort of mood.
Wi Dud: Three solid efforts over five furlongs of late and now tries the extra furlong again. Overall profile suggests though that the minimum distance is his best and the Abbaye next month could be more his forte.
Sierra Vista: Long old season but holding her form well and not disgraced in good company of late. Credit to connections but will probably finish in the pack again.
Scarlet Runner: Ran in the 1000 Guineas and now back sprinting having been beaten fair and square over seven furlongs behind Wake Up Maggie at Goodwood. Gets all the allowances but hard to see her figuring.
Conclusion: Sakhee’s Secret on top of his game will win again but the race for the other two places has an open look. Marchand D’Or is in decent nick while Asset has ideal conditions but the 11/1 with totesport about Hellvelyn looks tempting as he boasts the credentials to hoist him into the frame at the very least.
