Lazio’s Cristian Brocchi is ready to take out the frustrations of a lengthy injury absence on Serie A leaders Sampdoria on Sunday.
The 33-year-old is one of a number of Biancoceleste players to have been sidelined by injury this season, missing a month-and-a-half with a thigh problem.
But Davide Ballardini’s selection problems now appear to be easing – Brocchi joining fellow midfielder Fabio Firmani, defenders Mobida Diakite and Stefan Radu and striker Julio Cruz in rejoining the squad.
Brocchi told Corriere Dello Sport: “It is the first time in my career I have been out so long because of an injury. I suffered a lot – but now I really want to return. When someone is missing in difficult times for the team, it seems the absence is felt even more.”
However, he played down concerns over his side’s indifferent form – which sees them languishing in mid-table after starting the season with two wins, three draws and two defeats.
He added: “This season, many teams have not played at the highest levels.
“Perhaps the only team that has gone above expectations is Samp. Others, for better or worse, have experienced minor setbacks or have played badly.”
Despite their many returnees, Lazio have lost Simone del Nero and Mourad Meghni to thigh injuries – while forwards Stephen Makinwa and Goran Pandev and defender Lionel Scaloni have trained separately from the main squad this week.
The Blucerchiati, who top the table on goal difference above Internazionale, go into the game having won just one of their last three games – although that triumph came against Inter to keep them at the summit.
They will also have a weakened side on display – with Franco Semioli, Fernando Tissone and Vincenzo Fiorillo injured and Daniele Gastaldello serving a one-match suspension.
They can, however, rely on the rejuvenated Antonio Cassano – whose form has led coach Luigi Del Neri to question his continuing absence from the national team.
Italy coach Marcelo Lippi rounded on fans after they chanted the forward’s name as their side made hard work of beating Cyprus 3-2 on Wednesday.
Cassano has not represented his country since June of last year after developing a reputation as a trouble-maker, but Del Neri insists he has mellowed and warrants a recall.
He said: “Does the coach (Lippi) have a duty to explain his choices? We are all not exactly forced to, but close enough – because there is a sort of rapport of collaboration between pundits and tacticians.
“We can all have different ideas, for example on Cassano, but it is right that a coach chooses those he considers opportune for his team.
“(Cassano) works, co-operates actively with everyone, is five years older than when I worked with him at Roma and is in an environment that keeps him calmer.
“Cassano is one of many who deserve to be in the (national team), but the coach makes his decisions and must be respected.”
