Acapulco: Was the biggest positive in the betting ring for the Ballydoyle runners in the Great Voltigeur and not disgraced when finishing fourth behind Lucarno. Lacked the pace in the closing stages over a mile and a half and might be better suited now tackling a longer trip.
Celestial Halo: Does seem to have something to find as he steps out of handicap company for the first time in three outings.
Honolulu: Defied his inexperience to run a blinder in the Ebor when second to Purple Moon. Promoted to a worthy favourite on the back of that effort and is sure to take all the beating. Trainer Aidan O’Brien has provided three winning favourites of the race since 2001 and this looks very much like being number four.
Lucarno: Showed a good attitude for a deserved victory in the Great Voltigeur at York after a string of solid efforts this season. Undoubtedly has the requisite class to win this but trainer John Gosden has aired concerns about whether 1m6f will be a suitable trip at this stage.
Macarthur: Finished third on all three starts this season, showing a good level of form without getting his head in front. Latest effort was behind Lucarno in the Great Voltigeur but may not confirm that with the likes of Acapulco.
Mahler: Won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot before faring worst of Aidan O’Brien’s quartet in the Great Voltigeur in fifth. Steps back up to a more suitable trip but could find one or two of the more lightly-raced hopefuls too good.
Raincoat: Second representative for John Gosden and shapes very much as if he has the stamina for the job. Got mucked about somewhat in the Gordon Stakes and probably capable of better than that bare form.
Regal Flush: Represents Sir Michael Stoute, who is remarkably still seeking a first victory in the race. Supplemented by the Cheveley Park Stud for the not insignificant sum of £40,000 on the back of an impressive win at Haydock last weekend. Does need to find a little more but going in the right direction.
Samuel: Remains a maiden and unlikely to lose that tag here. Trainer John Dunlop feels he will find two or three too good, a statement difficult to argue with.
Veracity: Ran a storming race to finish second to Allegretto against his elders in the Goodwood Cup and looks to be improving at a rate of knots. This has been his target since and could be one for each-way punters to latch on to at double-figure odds.
Conclusion: Lucarno is sure to go well if getting the trip but it is hard to argue with the credentials of Honolulu, defying his inexperience with a tremendous second in the Ebor. He is on offer at 9/4 and that looks worth a punt to give his handler yet another success in the race.
