Epsom Derby Betting Preview Tips Odds

The Epsom Derby is one of the most prestigious flat thoroughbred horse races in the entire world. The race is open to 3 year old colts and fillies, and past winners of the race have included some of the greatest flat racing horses of all time, including Shergar, Nijinsky and Nashwan.

With the Derby only a few days away, punters across the land are looking for that golden betting tip that will make their day. This years Epsom Derby has an immensely strong line-up, and picking a winner could prove to be difficult.

The current ante-post favourite in the Epsom Derby betting is Sea The Stars, currently with odds of 11/4 at Sky Bet. The John Oxx trained colt was an impressive winner at the recent 2,000 Guineas, and he has been rested over the winter to ensure he hits his peak for the Derby. John Oxx has described him as a ‘classy horse’, and his pace was obvious to those who saw the 2000 Guineas, hence why he is so heavily favoured. However, no horse has won the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby since the aforementioned Nijinsky and Nashwan, so those looking for Epsom Derby tips might want to look elsewhere.

Other horses that are expected to do well all seem to be coming from Aiden O’Brien’s stable. The Irish trainer is entering six horses for the race in total, and Sky Bet has set up a range of Epsom Derby betting specials to reflect this. For the winner to be trained by O’Brien, the odds are 1/2, and for the winner not to be trained by O’Brien, the odds are 6/4. You can also have a wager on an O’Brien 1-2-3 at odds of 5/1.

Two of O’Brien’s horse expected to do very well are Fame And Glory and Black Bear Island, with odds of 7/2 and 15/2 respectively at Sky Bet. Fame And Glory raced to victory at the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial and certainly has the pedigree to triumph at the Derby. Black Bear Island won the Dante Stakes on May 14th and his odds certainly look very appealing.

Those looking for more of an outsider might want to stake an e/w bet on Crowded House, currently with odds of 20/1 at Sky Bet. Crowded House was the favourite for the Epsom Derby over the winter, but after a poor performance at the Dante Stakes, where he was beaten by the aforementioned Black Bear Island by over four lengths, his stock has dropped considerably. However, trainer Brian Meehan put him on the easy-list for a week after the race and he is apparently flourishing again.
