After our embarrassing defeat to Iceland 2-1 at Euro 2016, Roy Hodgson immediately resigned as England Manager. There is no obvious stand out candidates especially Englishman. The FA have said they will not rule out going with another foreign manager, after little success when the employed Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello, who both drew large salaries without achieving any more than previous England managers at bug tournaments.
A week after our defeat to Iceland and the contenders to be the next england manager are as follows:
JÜRGEN KLINSMANN – Previous National Job USA and German, German, likely odds 7-2
He is a positive looking manager, and is credited with turning around the German national side when he steered a young german team to the World Cup Semi Final in 2006. He is fondly liked in the UK after his time at Spurs player in the 1990s. He is fluent in English thanks to his time playing in England and also living and managing in the US> The negative is he is German 🙂 which might not make him popular in post brexit England.
GLENN HODDLE, TV Pundit on both ITV and BT Sport, Not managed in years , English, odds 11-2
The attraction of Hoddle is he English but likes his teams to play in a continental style. As a player Hoddle was a genius at reading the game and he of course has done the job before. Other pro’s have backed him including Gary Lineker, ALan Shearer and Harry Rednapp.
What works against him is he has not managed in years, and his last time at England ended in the wrong headlines when his views with his “controversial belief that the disabled, and others, are being punished for sins in a former life.” He was sacked amid pressure from disability groups etc.
SAM ALLARDYCE, Current Sunderland Manager, English, 8-1.
Big Sam has worked miracles with unfashionable clubs, he made his name with Bolton making his team punch above their weight. Last Season he masterminded the premier league future of Sunderland. The feeling is though that the England job will be a job to far.
LAURENT BLANC, recently sacked by PSG, French, 12-1
He has national manager experience having being the French manager in 2010 he has done everything at player and manager level. Winning the ligue 1 with the resources of PSG does not really count for much especially as he has failed in the champions league. His French team did not even beat Roy Hodgsons England at Euro 2012.
EDDIE HOWE, Young upstart Bournemouth, English, 12-1
He is the latest next big thing, Eddie Howe is the stand out young manager in England. He speaks well and has got Bouremouth into the premier league and they stayed up relatively easily. He believes in fast attacking football.
The downside is he has not managed a top club or top players and could the England job ruin a young talented manager.
ARSÈNE WENGER, Arsenal, French, 12-1
The french professor who has been the main stay at Arsenal for the best part of 20 years. He is creditted with changing the football style of boring arsenal and had great success in his earlier years, but to use the words of Mourinho he is a specialist in failure with 4th place in the premier league deemed to be success. His stock has dropped due to his years of not quite getting arsenal to the top table of European football.
ALAN PARDEW, Crystal Palace, English, 20-1
Alan Pardew would seem to be a good bet he mnaged to keep Newcastle together and they have got relegated since he left, and he is doing a great job at Crystal Place, he is a good man manager. His teams tend to better before xmas which does not bod well for managing England players after a long hard season.
CLAUDIO RANIERI, Leicester, Italian, 25-1
He of course has hero status getting little old Leicester to the premier league title. He has buckets of experience and has the good humour to deal with the media. He did not do great when he managed Greece, they even lost to the Faroe Islands.
SLAVEN BILIC, West Ham, Croatian, 33-1
He did a great jon on the ITV 2016 panel, and has got West Ham right up their in the premier league. He did not do so well as a national manager with Croatia.
DAVID MOYES, unattached, Scottish, 40-1
He made his name managing Everton for 15 years on a show string, but when let loose on a big club he struggled with Man utd in decline. he is a safe manager who does not set the world alight.
LARS LAGERBACK, Iceland, Swedish, wildcard
Well if you cant beat them get their manager. HE has the knack of beating England nevere losing in 7 matches. he has though never managed a major nation or club.
